The pupil premium was introduced in April 2011. It is allocated to children from low-income families who have registered for free school meals at any point in the last six years, in both main stream and non-mainstream settings, and children who had been looked after continuously for more than six months.
Schools are free to spend the Pupil Premium as they see fit. However, they are responsible for how they use the additional funding to support pupils from low-income families and the other target groups. At St Joseph's we ensure that Pupil Premium funding is not simply absorbed into mainstream budgets, but instead is carefully targeted at the designated children. The school evaluates its Pupil Premium spending, avoiding spending it on activities that have little impact on achievement for disadvantaged pupils and spending it in ways known to be most effective.
We would like to encourage parents and carers to apply for free school meals without fear of stigma. It is a straight forward process and the school office is always happy to help.
For 2015-16, St Joseph's received £50,000 for its pupil premium allocation. The school intends to spend this year's pupil premium money on specific support in the form of one to one teaching, the Oxfordshire reading Campaign, dyslexia support, speech and language support, emotional well-being interventions, literary resources, school stationery equipment, staff training, Home-School link worker support, clubs, music, trips and other extended school activities.
